EDUCATION

As part of efforts to support schools in GA West Municipality of Greater Accra Region of Ghana under our acclaimed Teach In Ghana(TIG) Project, VPWA engages volunteers to assist to offset shortfall of teachers in our local schools and fill gaps in subject areas that need support for the benefit of the Children.

As a volunteer teaching in Ghana, you will receive assistance from the local school teachers regarding the lesson plans and teaching curriculum. There will be a Teaching Guide book to assist you in your daily work with the children. You will also have a timetable showing time and period you will be in a specific class to teach.

Volunteers are asked to assist with lessons Monday to Friday (8:00am -2:30pm)

You do not need to be a certified teacher to be able to volunteer on this project.

 Available Positions

Pre-School Teacher

A pre-school Volunteer is required for children below the age of 5. Teach them simple ways of doing things including reading alphabet and numeric. Music, drama etc.

Teach children between the age of 5 and 12 are required to teach the following subjects Creative Art, Computing, English, French, Mathematics, Science and French.

Junior High School Teacher                  

 Volunteers are required to teach Junior High School pupils between the age of 11 and 16 the following subjects Computing, Mathematics, English and French.

A volunteer is required assist in management of some of our local schools to help improve standard.

Requirements

· At least age 18 (no maximum age limit);
· Appreciable knowledge in English language
· Strong commitment to values and principles of volunteerism;
· Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;
· Ability to adjust in difficult living conditions;
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Minimum commitment of 4weeks is required and you can be here as long as you can

You can volunteer at any time throughout the year. 

Cost of Living

Refer to Living Conditions and Cost     €400 for first 4 weeks. Each additional week is 100. Up to 30% Scholarship available if staying longer (Use www.xe.com for currency conversions).

Half of total cost  of proposed stay (included in total price)

Accommodation:

 

Volunteers working on VPWA projects in Accra lives in our house in Pokuase (north of Accra). Depending on number of volunteers at a time, a volunteer might share room with another person. Maximum of 2 persons per room is allowed. Couples are advice to inform us in advance. The rooms have comfortable beds with pillows so no need to bring sleeping bags. The volunteer apartment has kitchen with fridge. Toilet and shower facility available.

It has a democratic electoral process and a stable economy. Our team will ensure your health and safety at all times and you'll have emergency support 24/7.

Flights

Volunteers must arrange their own flights to Accra Airport (ACC). Please be aware that you should communicate your arrival date and time to Volunteer Coordinator. The following airlines fly into Accra:

Visa

You must obtain a volunteer visa for travel to Ghana. Once you have secured your place in the project and made deposit. We will send you a letter confirming your placement for your visa application.
